Re: “Hoping to Make Iran Sanctions Work but Readying Gas Masks, too” (March 5, 2010)
To the Editor:
According to the reporter Iran has only begun to enrich its uranium at 20%. This does not seem like a huge treat considering that an efficient weapon needs to be 75-90% enriched. It only becomes notable at the end of the article why Israel is so concerned about Iran’s weapon production and why they want tough sanctions. The viewpoints of those who Israel is trying to team up with are completely different than those surrounding Israel. To America, Iran is an existential threat that is seen to have very little chance of successfully attacking the mainland. But to Israel, this threat is much more than a fading idea, it is something that can happen within months and have devastating consequences. Having America backing Israel in their quest for harsh sanctions may prove to be something detrimental to the United States. A much better strategy for Israelis would be to enlist the help of other Middle Eastern countries that are also at risk of an Iranian attack. Although this may not seem like a rational idea, it is better than running to the “protector” and will give Israel, as well as the rest of the world, piece of mind that they can indeed solve their own problems. The title of the article says it all. Everything comes down to confidence and Israel’s lack of confidence in their plan to solve things without violence.
